Planting of around 200 Mahogany and 100 assorted fruit trees saplings capped the Celebration of the 51st Araw ng Kiwalan on June 19.

Barangay Captain Antonio Alon who led the Celebration told The New Ranao Star that they chose the Tree Planting activity as the most significant part of the event because Kiwalan is one of the most industrialized barangay in Iligan and trees are naturally needed to absorb even the most minute carbon dioxide that the Industrial Plants may emit into the atmosphere.

He said that there are still wide areas that need to be planted in the barangay but this time they only prepared for the 300 tree saplings donated by PowerSource Philippines Energy, Inc. (PPEI).

He thanked both PPEI and Republic Cement for their help in making the activity successful.

He added that the planting of trees will go on as a tree growing activity because the barangay shall continue to take care of the planted saplings until they grow strong enough to withstand destructive elements.

The Tree Planting Activity was carried out by all members of the Barangay Council, all Purok Presidents, Barangay Employees, TESDA SMAW Scholars, PowerSource Philippines Energy, Inc. (PPEI) and other participating companies.

PPEI was represented by ComRel Rechel Centeno and Amor Orbe.

Iligan City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) Maminta Papaladun together with SEMS Chief Rafael Dugenio of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), based in Tubod, Lanao del Norte, Iligan City CENRO SEMS Chief Benjie Jumawan and Foresters Farouk L. Guro and Benny G. Arie also joined in the activity.

The 51st Araw ng Kiwalan celebration began earlier with a Fun Run where awards were given to the first 20 finishers.

A Holy Mass followed at the Barangay Gym presided over by Rev. Fr. Andy Tampos.

Barangay Councilmen Pablito N. Ermac and Ardie B. Sanchez were the First and Second Readers of the Scriptures while Barangay Councilwoman Juliet R. Serrano was the Psalmist of the day.

The Bread and Wine were offered at the altar by Barangay Captain Antonio Alon and Mrs. Nora P. Alon.

A Disco was held in the evening.
