Polomolok is South Cotabato's cleanest, greenest town
KORONADAL CITY, July 11 -- A town known for its pineapple production has been named the cleanest and greenest municipality in South Cotabato as it celebrates its 50th foundation anniversary, officials said.
As the province's cleanest and greenest town, Polomolok with a population of 152,789 based on the 2015 census of population, has received PHP800,000 cash prize and plaque of recognition.
Surallah, with a population of 84,539 based on the 2015 census, came in second and got PHP500,000 cash prize. Surallah is South Cotabato's Alternate Provincial Agro-industrial Center and a major producer of corn and rice.
The municipality of Tupi, an upland town next to Polomolok and sits at the southern part of Mt. Matutum, came in third.
With a population of 61,843, Tupi is known for its cool climate and is considered as the fruit, vegetable and flower basket of South Cotabato. It received PHP300,000 cash.
Non winners received consolation prizes of PHP50,000.
Under the supervision of the Department of Interior and Local Government of South Cotabato, the search was part of the province's 50th foundation anniversary activities
DILG South Cotabato Provincial Director Lailyn Ortiz told reporters the main objective of the search was to instill in local residents the value of cleaning and greening program of the government.
"Being clean and green has so many benefits," she said. "It gives healthy environment, prevent diseases and many more," she added.
Awarding of prizes was done during the opening program of the golden foundation anniversary and 17th T'nalak Festival opening program.
The festival’s unique name is attributed to a popular piece of colorful cloth woven by the local T’boli women (T’boli is a tribe in the region). The cloth is known as a t’nalak, and is made of abaca clothing. (PNA)
