UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 NGOs endorse SDG 2030 through Fun Run

Members of Beyond 2015 organizations including ECOWEB, in cooperation with Philippine Social Enterprise Network (PhilSEN), YES Production and Iligan Junk Dealers Association have put their acts together in support of the UN’s new initiative, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 which will be launched in New York by the UN and assembly of countries by the end of September. This replaces the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) program which will end this year.
Unlike the 8-point MDG which was more of UN-initiated, the 17-point SDG 2030 has been crafted thru participatory process which gathered voices of civil society organizations aside from of the national governments.
The SDG highlights the fact that countries like the Philippines are prone to natural disasters and require a focus on environment, climate change and disaster risk reduction.
Regina “Nanette” Salvador-Antequisa, ECOWEB Executive Director, and National Steering Committee Member of Beyond2015 introduced a bandwagon project through ECOWEB that would heighten the local public awareness on the SDG2030. Dubbed “IRun&Roll-4d-Environment to SDG2030,” the one day activity widens the participation of stakeholders in the preservation of the environment. Antequisa is also the Sectoral Representative to the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC-VDC).
IRun&Roll-4d-Environment to SDG2030 is a catchy phrase that entices people to take to the streets and run for a cause which is part of a global environmental campaign linked to the Sustainable Development Goals.
The fun run will be held on September 20, 2015 in the city of Iligan. The run will start at 6:00 o’clock in the morning and end at 9:00 am. The event will start at the Children’s Park of Barangay San Miguel and will end at the Mandulog Bridge, some 10 kilometers up North from the start-up point.
The bandwagon run has widened sectoral and public participation by including children, students, out-of-school youth, women, farmers, fisherfolks, drivers, urban poor, the ones actually targeted to benefit from the SDG 2030 program, whose lives the organizers hope will change as government programs become more inclusive and responsive according to the 17 SD goals. The organizers have included four run categories in the form of road length which are: 3 km, 5 km and 10 km.
The last category, the 2-kilometer run has made the IRun&Roll project one of the most innovative in terms of public participation. According to Regina Antequisa, the shortest road length run are for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens. “We also expect participation from the deaf and blind. The Roll using their wheel chairs allow even those who are physically challenged for they are also the ones who can protect the environment in their own unique ways,” says Antequisa.
A crowd sourcing type of funding has been introduced by requiring three types of registration fees. The PHP 150 registration fee (i.e., $3.33) applies to the children to senior citizens participants. The PHP 200 fee (i.e., $4.44) applies to adults who can afford to join this category. These two categories are inclusive of providing participants with singlet/runner’s jersey, race bib, water and snacks.
A less than one dollar or PHP 30.- registration can let anyone join the event but without the amenities. The innovative part of this event is that the organizers have opted to let participants pay in terms of recyclable wastes such as plastics, bottles, paper and cartons, thus ensuring the fulfillment of the environmental mission of SDG2030.
Cash prizes and medals await the winners to be selected as the top three individual runners of the three road length categories. To strengthen the linkage between the event and the organizers, the latter have invited institutions and private organizations to become participating institutions for either the major, minor and ordinary categories.
Such linkages are also expressed in the sponsorship designed to maximize the participation by becoming an Event Partner or a Major Sponsor, a Minor Sponsor or a Donor with corresponding cash contributions. Major sponsors include the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Holcim with some support generated from other private sector companies and the local government.
This event has also been made a part of the ongoing 2015 Iligan Fiesta Celebration and the indigenous Diyandi Festival. The organizers have urged organizations/offices/institutions to actively support and participate in the event.
