Dr. Muslim leads MSUS 54th foundation day

MARAWI CITY – Dr. Macapado A. Muslim, president of the Mindanao State University System (MSUS) led the celebration of the 54th Foundation Day Anniversary of the prime state university in Mindanao at the University Sports Complex at the MSU main campus here on September 1.

With the theme: MSU @ 54: Soaring to World-Class Status in 2020, Muslim was the Foundation Day speaker.


The proper program started with the annual Foundation Day Parade of different MSU colleges together with the MSU Board of Regents, Heads of MSU Campuses, Alumni and guests.

MSU is primarily composed of eleven campus systems, namely, MSU- Marawi City, MSU-Illigan Institute of Technology (IIT), MSU-General Santos, MSU- Naawan, MSU-Tawi-tawi, MSU-Buug, MSU-Maguindanao, MSU-Sulu, MSU-Maigo, MSU-LNAC, and MSU-Lopez Jaena

In the main campus, MSU has seventeen Colleges: College of Agriculture, College of Business Administration and Accountancy, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Fisheries, College of Forestry and Environmental Studies, College of Health Sciences, College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, College of Information Technology, College of Law, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, College of Public Affairs, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, College of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, King Faisal Center for Islamic: Arabic and Asian Studies, Graduate School, and College of Medicine.

In his State of the University Address, Muslim said on things that must be looked through after the 54 years of the establishment of the University.

He cited among others the establishment of several buildings in the main campus and other state universities.

He highlighted the 91 infrastructure and 104 equipment’s projects allocated in the whole campus.

He said that among the entire campuses, MSU main campus which had the highest student population had got the biggest program offered.

Of the 82,868 student population of the whole universities, 18,635 are said to be from the main campus.

With this, the campus was able to produce 59,585 graduates in 2015.

The university was able to produced 168 top ten places in licensure examinations from 2008-2015, out of whom, 86 came from the main campus.

MSU was able to accomplish 100 per cent passing rate in licensure examinations for Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Social Worker and others.

This somehow did not include students who passed but were not able to make it on the top.

Since its establishment on September 1, 1961 through RA 1387, as amended, MSU was one of the government’s responses to the so-called “Mindanao Problem.”

As one of the best universities of the country in terms of quality education, MSU is also considered to be one of the heavy weight higher education institution.

It is one of the most populated universities second would be the Polytechnic University of the Population (PUP) with a total population of 78,000, the university was allocated with a total budget of P2. 48 billion from 2012- 2015 and was also given an additional of P150.63 million budget to upgrade and modernize for it to become a world class institution.

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Chairman of Finance Committee of Senate provided MSU another P250 million budget under General Appropriation Act.

This budget is allocated to all MSU Campuses as part of the modernization of the whole University.

Escudero who was said to be the chosen Guest Speaker on the Foundation day but was not able to make it due to his busy schedules also provided P5 million from his PDAF to MSU.

The given budget will be used for the renovation of all dormitories. Water stations with hot and cold waters as well as internet laboratories in each dormitories will also be established. Also, the P 100 million share are intended to repair and renovate the International house, bachelor’s quarter and others.

The Mindanao State University will also established programs that will help the barangays and out of school youth which will be intended for skills and training program. In the vision of its accomplishments, President Muslim wanted to make MSU as a world class, globally competitive and tremendous of improvements of the quality of education. As a melting pot of the South, the university serves as a bridge not only by the people with different culture and religions but also of the grassroots people who were given the chance to study and have a quality education.

Muslim also presented Plaques of Commendation to 2015 Licensure Examination Topnotchers assisted by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Concurrent Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (External Units), Dr. Mariam M. Diron.

Another highlight of the event was a Cultural presentation, Kakhariyala, performed by MSU-Lopez Jaena Cultural Dance Troupe. The dance depicted the Subanen Culture.

Dr. Emmanuel M. Lagare, Executive Vice President of the MSU System, gave the closing remarks and was followed by the singing of the MSU Hymn by the University Band.
