BY MASIDING NOOR YAHYA
MANILA, July 27 - Malacanang has declared Tuesday, July 29, as regular holiday in commemoration of ‘Eid-ul-Fitr, a feast that marks the end of Muslim’s holy fasting month of Ramadan.
Prophet Muhammad has enjoined his followers to watch the new moon on the 29th day of Shaban, the month immediately preceding Ramadan, and to start the fast when the new moon is sighted. But if it is not sighted, the Prophet said, Shaban should be completed thirty days and therefore Ramadan should start the day after the 30th of Shaban.
The Prophet further commanded the Muslims to watch again for the new moon on the 29th day of Ramadan and if the new moon is sighted, the following day should be the start of Shawwal, otherwise, Ramadan should be completed 30 days.
This year, Sheik Murad Amanoddin, the Grand Mufti of the Philippines, declared on June 27 which corresponded to Shaban 29th that the new moon was not seen, thus Ramadan should start on June 29th.
Again, on July 27, he officially announced that the new moon was sighted in almost all parts of the country and thus declared that Ramadan should end that day and the first day of Shawwal should be the following day, July 28.
In watching the new moon on June 27 and July 27, different Ulama organizations and various Muslim CSOs did the niyata or watching of the new moon in strategic upland and near by the sea areas in various parts of the country where the new moon would likely to be sighted.
