DOH: 2nd COVID-19 patient in PH dies in Manila; total infected climb to 49

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is hospital-image.pngEven as the total number of people confirmed in the Philippines infected by the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has climbed at 49, the Department of Health on Wednesday night confirmed that a Filipino COVID-19 patient has died in Manila.


The victim is the second fatality in the Philippines of the pandemic coronavirus disease. A 44-year-old Chinese male succumbed after being tested positive for the disease in early February.

The DOH identified the fatality as Patient 35, a 67-year-old female who was confined at the Manila Doctors Hospital. It did not reveal her name.

She began manifesting the COVID-19 symptoms on February 29, and was confirmed to have had the disease on Wednesday.

49 confirmed cases

DOH had tallied 16 newly confirmed COVID-19 infections bringing the total to 49 as of Wednesday.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Health Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said health authorities were tracing the contacts of the confirmed cases.

Vergeire said eight of the 49 cases, including two repatriates from the coronavirus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship, were in stable condition at various hospitals across the country.
