Maranao Lad Tops Prestigious Nationwide Math Quiz

MARAWI CITY: For the first time in years, a 12-year old Grade 6 pupil of My Precious Child Learning Center, this City, topped the Metrobank-DepEd Math Challenge (MTAP), the most prestigious Math competition in the country that culminated last March 29-30, 2019.

Michael Ike V. McMichael, the Coach, identified the champion as Mohammad Nur G. Casib, son of Dr. Norodin Casib and Dr. Sittienor G. Casib both of Amai Pakpak Medical Center, here.

He said that 403,707 public and private school pupils/students from 219 Divisions nationwide participated in the elimination rounds.

He added that this is a yearly competition consisting of three stages for both elementary (Grades 1-6) and secondary Grades (7-10) levels.

“The first stage which was the elimination rounds started last January 20-21,” he said.

The top 3 contestants from each year level qualified for the Team Oral Competition in their respective Divisions last February 7-8, 2019, he related.

Winners qualified for the Regional Competitions in respective regions only for Grades 6 and 10, he continued.

Regional champions who hurdled the cut off score were qualified for the 2019 MMC National Championship held at Metrobank Plaza, Makati City last March 29-30, 2019 both for Individual & Team for both Grade 6 & 10 levels, he said.

The winners of the final stage were: First Place Mohamad Nur G. Casib, Precious Child Learning Center, Marawi City; Second Place Tracy Lauren T. Lei, Saint Jude Catholic School, Manila; and Third Place Miguel I. Cayetano Tuguegarao West Central School, Tuguegarao City, he reported.

The individual contest for grade 6 comprised of both written (60%) and oral (40%) competition. Casib got 58/60 in the written exam and 53/60 in the oral examination.

For the Team Competition, Tracy Lauren T. Lei Nicholas Marcus B. Lua Saint Jude Catholic School, Manila won First Place and Place Francis Rafael C. Flor Muhammad Farouk P. Tan II Silangan Elementary School, Taguig City won second place, he he continued.

In the Grade 10 Individual Competition 1st Place was won by Bryce Ainsley A. Sanchez Grace Christian College, Quezon City, 2nd Place went to Stephen James L. Ty Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Zamboanga City and the 3rd Place fell on Kiel Sam V. Talosig Bataan National High School, Balanga City.

In the Grade 10 Team Competition, Stephen James L. Ty Aiman Andrei U. Kue Zamboanga Chung Hua High School, Zamboanga City, won First Place; Paul Samson B. Topacio Al Patrick C. Castro Makati Science High School, Makati City, 2nd Place; and Charles Dwight M. Palaez Jorenz G. Espillardo Quezon Science High School, Tayabas, Quezon got the 3rd Place.

It was learned that the Champion, Mohammad Nur Casib had had also won a Gold Medal (the first Filipino to get the award) last year (September 28 to October 4, 2018) in Zhejiang, China in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools (IMSO).

The competition was composed of 3 levels: Short Answer, Essay and Exploration, it was said.

It was also gathered that in July, last year, the young Casib won a Bronze Medal in the 21st Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest in Hongkong.
