ILIGAN CITY – In the recently concluded Bangsa Mranao Congress (BMC) held in Iligan City, the Bangsa Mranao (Maranao People) expressed their vigorous support to the claim of the Sultanate of Sulu over Sabah, now being ruled by Malaysia.
BMC Executive Council Chairman, Sultan sa Lanao, Sultan Firdausi Ismail Yahya Abbas, said that the delegates to the Congress numbering around 500 Mranaos, by acclamation, voiced out thunderously their support for the claim of the Sultanate of Sulu over Sabah.
The said support was followed by the passage of BMC Resolution No. 1 resolving that the Bangsa Mranao vigorously support the Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah’s claim over Sabah through Sultan Mohammad Fuad Abdullah Kiram l, the Sultan of Sulu and Sabah, Abbas added.
Sultan Abbas stated that Sabah belongs to the Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah on legal and historic grounds.
According to Abbas, Sabah was leased to Overbeck and Dent when the territory was under the British Empire by the Sultan of Sulu in the later part of the 18th century.
To this day, he said, the Malaysian government still pays rental to the Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah, Abbas emphasized.
He asserted that it was only the past Philippine Presidents who benefited from this issue of the claim over Sabah and in consideration archived the legitimate and lawful Sabah claim of the Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah.
The Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah is the legitimate claimant and will pursue this in the international legal forum. Sabah belongs to the Bangsa Tausog (Tausog People of Sulu, Philippines) and has every legal right to pursue it and wrest it from the usurper Malaysian government, Abbas an expert on International Law opined.
Under Sultan Mohammad Fuad Abdullah Kiram l, the Bangsa Tausog are presently preparing for the pursuit of the Sabah claim, legally and militarily if necessary, Abbas said.
He averred that the Philippine's passive position on the Sabah claim is not only lamentable but abhorrent because it is the moral obligation of the Philippine's to render assistance to the Sultan of Sulu and Sabah in pursuing the claim which it has reneged on.
Under President Benigno Aquino lll, the Philippine government unabashedly abandoned the Tausogs who are Philippine citizens in Sabah when they were subjected to various violations of their human rights by the Malaysian authorities, Abbas mentioned.
“The Sabah claim is very solidly based on legal grounds which will readily merit a favourable decision. It is much stronger than the claim over the Spratley or Scarborough islands. Sabah is far more economically significant than those islands. It has long puzzled the Bangsa Tausog why, despite these facts, the Philippine government has remained passive on the Sabah claim,” Abbas said.
Abbas also said that Sultan Kiram told him that since the Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah owns Sabah, it has the right to get it back and if necessary evict the unlawful occupant from Sabah.
Sultan Abbas told this paper that he has formed a legal team of six lawyers who are now preparing the legal approach and strategy to claim Sabah.
According to Sultan Abbas, Sultan Kiram has not ruled out an amicable settlement with Malaysia. (RSP)
