All set for 2-day mining symposium in Davao City

DAVAO CITY, Sept. 21 (PNA) -- The two-day 22nd Annual Mining Symposium is set on September 22 to 23 at the SMX Convention Center here with a theme “Responsible Mining: Friend or Foe?”

The upcoming symposium will be sponsored by the Mindanao Association of Mining Engineers (MAEM) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Davao region (MGB-11).

The event will commence through a parade that will be joined by the participants to the symposium on September 22, Engr. Alexis Baligod, president of MAEM, said.

He said the parade will be dubbed as “Solidarity Parade of the Stakeholders for Responsible Mineral Development and Environment.”

Participants to the two-day activity will include all the stakeholders of the mineral development industry particularly the members of the host communities, the indigenous peoples, the families of the mine workers and mine contractors, suppliers, members of the academe, students taking up the courses of environment, geology, metallurgical and mining engineering, the professional group sector, non-government organizations and the religious sector.

A manifesto will be signed after the parade in support of the government’s call for responsible mining, he added.

During the symposium technical papers on the latest mining technologies, environment, community development and academic research will be presented by speakers to the participants.

The celebration will also coincide with the 25th founding anniversary of MAEM which was initially conceptualized by Engrs. Constancio Paye, Jr., Edgar Martinez and the late Noel Villaflor at a time when there were no active mining engineers' associations in Mindanao, Engr. Baligod said in a statement to the media on Wednesday.

“Today, MAEM has grown into a big organization of engineers and associate members working in the minerals development industry particularly in the field of geothermal, oil and gas, metallic, coal, aggregates and construction. The members are mostly based in Mindanao and from the other parts of the country,” he added. (PNA)
