Tubod, Lanao del Norte – The provincial government of Lanao del Norte represented by its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has been chosen by the national evaluation board as one of the top three provinces that will vie for the national Gawad Kalasag award.

The ‘Gawad Kalasag’ (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) award is given to individuals, non-government organizations, private sector and government organizations, in recognition of their initiative in helping the Filipino government uplift the standard of disaster management in the country.

There are six categories that participants can join in the annual search. These include Provincial, City, Municipal, Academic Institution, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and Hospital.

On February 1 and 2, 2016, a composite team of national evaluators composed of representatives from National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Office of Civil Defense (OCD), and League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP) were in the province to assess and validate the bid of Lanao del Norte.

The national evaluators visited five coastal towns of the province. Among the sites visited were flood markers and monitoring devices at Liangan East, Bacolod town; the Demologan Operations and Evacuation Center; the mangrove plantation and core shelter at Brgy. Rebocon, Kolambugan; several livelihood projects, as well as early warning systems located all over Lanao del Norte.

Among the specific areas assessed were Prevention and Mitigation; Plans, Policies and Budget; Disaster Mitigation Measure; Early Warning System; and Recovery and Rehabilitation.

Last year, the province of Lanao del Norte was adjudged as third place winner in the national search of Gawad Kalasag. LAR & VNL/PIO-LDN
