Regional Governor Mujiv S. Hataman of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) condemned in the highest terms the murder of Marawi City police chief by still unidentified gunmen in broad daylight Saturday afternoon.
In a statement, Hataman said "We grieve over the murder of Marawi Police chief Al Abner Wahab Santos, and condemn in the highest possible terms this heinous and cowardly act that demonstrates brutality and an utter lack of regard for the value of human life."
"We have ordered the region's Philippine National Police to investigate and ensure the expeditious delivery of justice," Hataman said.
Initial reports said Police Superintendent Santos was driving his car when shot by unidentified men onboard a Mitsubishi Montero at the Sarimanok area in Barangay Luksa Datu.
Reports said the Montero vehicle was escorted by some men riding in motorcycles.
Authorities are yet to establish the motive behind the killing.
Santos had been installed as Marawi police chief a couple of times or more since last year.

Sources said his intense campaign against heinous crimes including proliferation of illegal drugs might have gained the hatred and anger of criminals in the locality.
Last year, the city police had arrested drug suspects and confiscated a certain amount of shabu (crystal meth) inside Lumber Area, a well-known drug den in the city.
