“Let’s Talk Dirty, to Clean Up the City” was the theme of the 1st Anniversary Celebration of Solid Waste Management (SWM) in the Islamic City of Marawi.

Held at the City Plaza Cabili, on November 20, 2014, the event gave emphasis on the importance of recycling to solve the waste problemin the city.

The event was attended by Sultan Fahad “Pre” Salic, Mayor of the Islamic City of Marawi; Councilor Abdani T. Alonto; former city mayor Omar Solitario Ali, Executive Director of Institute for Leadership and Development, Inc.; Engr. Casan Lazim, Chairman of Barangay Banggolo; Ms. Samira Ali Gutoc, Team Leader of Solid Waste Management; Dr. Mokiin Salic Malna, Ph.D., Solid Waste Management Board Chairman; Ustadj Abdulrahman Taher and other city officials.

The Agriculture’s Office demonstrated the making of all natural fertilizers that is recycled from to-be-trashed parts of a plants, trees and fruits. These are leaves or dry leaves, fruit seeds, and fruit peels from mango, pineapple, banana, etc.

They explained their processes and procedures of making the natural fertilizers. First, they would gather the to-be-trashed ingredients everywhere in the Islamic City of Marawi, most of which are from the side-walk vendors who sell fruits. Second, they crush the ingredients to almost like a powder. Then, they’re going to dry the crushed ingredients naturally using the sun light.

This natural fertilizer is a very creative way of recycling. The fruit peels fertilizer has a very good effect on the plants. It is safer to use rather than the usual fertilizers that contains chemicals that could affect the naturalness of the plant that is planted. Banana peels contain 3.25% phosphorus and 41.76% potassium. These are two of three essential nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium) for plants. Melon peels are also quite high in potassium. Orange peels and probably other citrus peels are actually useful as an insecticide, as they will kill aphids.

This natural fertilizer can really help those farmers who can’t afford the usual fertilizers. And the most important in this is that it’s a big contribution in the cleanliness of the Islamic City.
