LASURECO, not in position to restore power?
By ROCAYA SUMNDAD OTICAL
As the court orders Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative (LASURECO) to restore electric power in some 27 towns in the 2nd District of Lanao del Sur. The said power utility finds itself in a quandary as to what steps it has to take even as it abides with the court’s order.
The electric cooperative advises its member-consumers of the situation that even as it is compelled to obey the court’s order, LASURECO does not own the 69KV lines that supply power to at least 18 of the 27 towns in the 2nd district of Lanao del Sur, according to a Lasureco official who requested anonymity.
This, apart from the temporary stopping of the construction of a segment of the 69KV undertaken by the cooperative that supply power to Marawi City up to Tugaya, this province, because of security reasons.
LASURECO assures its members-consumers that it will continue the construction of the segment of the 69 KV lines and abide by the court’s decision.
LASURECO had been imposing a strict disconnection to member-consumers who fail to pay their bills because of its huge debt to National Power Corporation (NPC). According to the cooperative’s management, this is the only viable long-term solution for the cooperative to survive.
Based on previous reports, the non-payment of member-consumer bills forced municipal officials to help their respective constituents by paying the said bills so as to sustain the supply of electricity in their respective towns, however, this system was cut short after the recent local elections when there were changes in the towns’ leadership.
The report stated that the situation worsened as the town mayors filed cases against the LASURECO manager that resulted to the court’s order for the cooperative to restore power supply.
