The Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) of the scenic Islamic City of Marawi launched a Clean Up Drive last Monday, June 16, that started from the main avenue and ended at the Padian (Public Market).
Secretary Mokiin Salic Malna said that it was the beginning of an environmental program to make Marawi attractive to domestic and foreign tourists.
Dubbed Basura Buster Dr. Linang Macabalang, Ph.D. said that they have adopted garbage segregation at source as a key to an effective solid waste management system in the City.
She said that they have encouraged junk dealers to collect recylable and reusable non-biodegradable materials from the household so that only residual and biodegradable materials will be brought to the controlled dump site.
Biodegradable materials are converted to organic fertilizer.
She also said that they will soon implement the penalties provided for violators of the Solid Waste Management Ordinance of the City.
They will post billboards and send leaflets to households and business establishments showing the table of penalties for violations.
Last Monday's activity was sponsored by the Office of the Market Superintendent and hosted by National Power Corporation.
The Office of the Market Superintendent under MSupt. Samer M.U. Salic has greatly improved the appearance and sanitation of Padian.
There are no ambulant vendors and all stall holders are properly aligned in thier respective places.
The Padian is also being readied for the influx of market-goers during the forthcoming month of Ramadhan.
The Clean Up Drive is being fully supported by DENR, NPC,PNP, Philippine Army, other departments of the City government and other civic and non-government organizations.
