Flash floods, landslides hit Northern Mindanao

The continuous heavy rains for the past three days hitting provinces in Northern Mindanao resulted in evacuation of about 3,000 people and the collapse of a bridge bordering two towns in Lanao del Norte as flooding hit the lowland areas and landslides in the region, the Regional Risk Disaster Reduction and Management Committee (RRDRMC) said Tuesday.
The continuous heavy rains for the past three days hitting provinces in Northern Mindanao resulted in evacuation of about 3,000 people and the collapse of a bridge bordering two towns in Lanao del Norte as flooding hit the lowland areas and landslides in the region, the Regional Risk Disaster Reduction and Management Committee (RRDRMC) said Tuesday.
The RRDRMC said most affected were the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, and Lanao del Norte. It said thousands of people were evacuated to safer grounds as streams and water tributaries in the areas started to overflow, resulting in flash floods.

More than 900 people were evacuated in Kauswagan municipality.
Commuters had to take bancas and motorboat to ferry them to the other side where passenger buses and public utility vehicles await.
In Lanipig, Kapatagan, Lanao Del Norte, a landslide occurred, but highway officials immediately cleared the roads, allowing vehicles and commuters to pass through, the RRDRMC reported.
In Iligan City, the overflowing of the Mahayahay River has rendered the Tambacan Bridge impassable Monday midnight for a few hours. It immedistely subsided before dawn. The government had cancelled classes in all levels and advised students and the public to keep ready for any eventuality.
The RRDRMC has not reported casualty as of Tuesday.
In Misamis Oriental, media reported flash flood and flooding in almost all of the province’ 24 towns while the aviation officials had cancelled 7 commercial flights in the Laguindingan airport Tuesday morning due to zero visibility.
Radio reports said Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in Misamis Oriental on Tuesday as heavy rains continue to pound the province resulting in flooding especially in the towns of Balingasag, Lagonglong, Medina and Magsaysay in the east district.
Reports said flash flood also occurred in the west district, particularly in the component city of El Salvador, the coastal towns of Opol, Alubijid, and Manticao.
The provincial risk disaster and reduction management council, however, has not reported any casualty, but thousands of provincial residents have been evacuated to designated evacuation centers.
Low Pressure Area (LPA) 70 kilometers southwest of Cagayan de Oro has been reported by government weather bureau and made advisory to Misamis Oriental due to heavy raisn that might trigger flash floods.
