Lala-NHS showcases Pagyanig 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill 2016

Lala National High School (Lala-NHS) in the town of Lanao Del Norte demonstrated its readiness in case a quake hits during the second quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill held last June 22, 2016.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD), in partnership with the Department of Education identified Lala NHS as the ceremonial pilot venue for the 2nd quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill where in Lala NHS won 1st place for 2015 GawadKalasag Search for Best Public School Rural category in Northern Mindanao.

The drill simulated the aftermath of a major quake and familiarized the participants with the proper response to such a disaster, including evacuation procedures.

At exactly 9:am that day the school bell rang for a minute long signaling students and teachers that an earthquake is occurring and this also marks that the drill has started.

Around 3,804 students and teachers in Lala National High School joined in the Pagyanig, Duck, Cover and Hold.

Minutes after the earthquake student walked briskly outside the campus and ducked with books over their heads while around 43 first aiders composed of students and teachers responded to earthquake “victims” and simulated first aid treatment.

A fire drill was included during the earthquake drill.

According to Nestor H. Patalinghud, MDRRMO, Designate of Lala LDN a fire drill was included in order for the fire responders to know what to do in case a fire occurs before fire fighter volunteers arrives at the scene.

“This is a challenge during the conduct of the drill for us to address the aspects of the drill that needs to be improved as we are aiming for the National GawadKalasag Search for Best Public School.” Said Nestor H. Patalinghud, MDRRMO, Designate of Lala LDN.

Gideon J. Miyas, SDRRMC HT-III said that FO2 Francis Alvin C. Mendiola Chief Administrator and Chief Plans and Training assisted the earthquake and fire drill and had been training the teachers and student for five (5) days before the actual date of the nationwide earthquake simultaneous drill.

During the evaluation participated by OCD-10 Director Ana Cañeda who was present during the drill along with various government lines agency and LGU, lauded Lala National High School participants for the success of their drill “Alarm system, communications, equip, evacuation, command and control, security, medical first aid, transport were very satisfactory” said Cañeda.

Ana Cañeda disclosed that some hospitals and business establishments had also joined the nationwide earthquake simultaneous drill.

“Schools are prioritized in these earthquake drills because they are the most populated sites in the region at any given weekday. The Department of Education (DepEd) even has its own department order institutionalizing earthquake drills every quarter.” Ms. Ana told the media. - IB/TNRS-
