BACOLOD KALAWI, Lanao del Sur: They say, Pindulonan Elementary School is a school of future leaders Indeed, it is. Thus said Maam Salma D. Guiling, the school principal, when she delivered her first State of the School Address (SOSA) recently.

Pindulonan Elementary School Principal Guiling cited two of the many professionals who are products of her School.

One is Dr. Datumanong Sarangani, the former executive vice president of Mindanao State University who earned his two masteral degrees in Bierut and his Ph.D. degree from the University of New York.

The other is Atty. Alizedney M. Ditucalan, Dean of the MSU College of Law who is a graduate of Masters of Law (Corporate Law) from Kyushu University, Fukuka, Japan. He is currently enrolled in Doctorate of Laws also in Corporate Law in same university.

Both Sarangani and Ditucalan finished their elementary education in Pindulonan Elementary School.

Principal Guiling delivered her SOSA in a well-attended program held last July 31, 2018 at the Quadrangle of Bacolod Central Elementary School where five other school principals in Bacolod District did the same.

In her SOSA, Guiling talked of the history of Pindulonan Elementary School, how it progresses all these years, the plans, programs and projects and what it undertakes in facing challenges and other things.

She said Pindulonan Elementary School is the oldest school in Bacolod Kalawi, and probably among the oldest schools in the province. It was built in the 1940’s. Teachers then were all non-Maranaos or Christians.

"Our School consists of four buildings: one Marcos Type buildding, two Ramos buildings and one make shift building," she said, adding that "We have two functional comfort rooms with enough water supply."

The school has 14 teaching force and one non-teaching staff. The teachers use none threatening discipline system style and are transparent in giving grades to the learners.

Guiling said: "As mandatory order of the DepEd, we always start the school year with Brigada Eskwela to make sure that our learners will be excited to go back to school specially their teachers and classrooms are ready for the coming school year. Aside from that, we are also conducting Oplan Balik Eskwela wherein we do house to house campaign to the nearest Barangay in our school."

Pindulonan Elementary School is a recipient of many programs given by the DepEd and other private organizations in order to help learners be motivated in coming to school every day. "One of those is the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP), in which we are going to cook nutritious foods for the underweight learners. Second is the Essential Health Care Program (EHCP), who gave our school washing facility where we supervised our pupils wash their hands and brush their teeth. Our school is also a recipient of the Single Drop who helped us fund the repair of our comfort rooms. Alhamdulillah, we have two functioning comfort rooms in our school."

Principal Guiling said the School has implemented the identified priority improvement areas based on the its SIP.

"Since our school is one of the selected recipients of the BEAM-ARMM READ ALL Program, our teachers are well-trained to teach reading across languages," she emphasized. "We are equipped with different tools and strategies to assess the reading skills of our students. We use RARS, ABCedarian Assessment. The teacher’s remedial plan and oral Reading Fluency Assessment is checked by the school head weekly," she added.

She said: "Reading corner is visible in every classroom in our school and is accessible to our learners. Alhamdulillah, the result of the graph during exam is always on the above level. Our goal is 'Every Learner a Reader'.

In addressing problems and issues, the School implements the School Action Cell (SLAC). It holds a quarterly PTCA meeting to discuss school rules, roles of the parents, and to present to them the Report Cards of their children.

Guiling is glad everything will be solved by the help of the teachers. "I know without them I could not be here."

Classroom observation of school head is also implemented before the instructional supervision of the different school heads and coordinators of the district, which is one of the best disttrict's practices.

In observing the teachers, the observers use the RCPC and MASCOT tool and a feed-backing or a clinical supervision is conducted right after the observation. Representative visitation e.g. division nurse and AFP.

Nutrition Month is celebrated every July of the year. Guiling said, "We celebrate this by eating nutritious foods and orienting our pupils why do we need to eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. The district nurse visits our school during this month to monitor the weight of our learners."

On the month of August, the School also celebrates Buwan ng Wika by holding a program where learners can showcase their talents in different category such as Balagtasan, Tula, Awit, Sayaw, Sabayang Awit and many others.

Science and Math celebration is a classroom-based celebration that is also marked by the School, wherein the learners can be engaged in the different activities involving math and science.

the month of November is the time for the School to celebrate National Reading Month, This is done through a program where pupils present different talents related to reading.

February is the month of talents. "We celebrate this by showcasing different talents our pupils in whatever field they want," Principal Guiling said. "Through this program, we were able to identify which of our pupils are good in singing, dancing, drawing, interpretative dancing and other talents," she added.

Another unique thing in Bacolod District is the conducting of the quarterly exams simultaneously and departmentally.

Since centralized Graduation is being practiced in our district for the past several years, recognition is done individually by school.

Principal Guiling said that the Summer Classes 2018 is the first time ever in the history of Pindulonan Elementary School. She said: "The summer classes focused on the slow learners. We divided them into three levels: 1st level is the Remedial, 2nd level is for enhancement and the 3rd day’s level is for Enrichment. The summer classes lasted for only 15 days, ending in a three-day summer youth camp leadership training."

Principal Salma Guiling enumerated the the following projects the Shool has implemented:

"Repair of the dilapidated roof of our makeshift Kindergarten classroom;

"Installed gate and arc of our school;
"Ongoing repair of the stage;
"Repair of the two functional comfort room;
"Installed water supply;
"Installed electric power;
"Installed wash tub for hand washing and tooth brushing;
"Free test material for the learners;
"No Contribution policy."

In addition this, the School also is also giving free school supplies at the start and 4th quarter of the school year.

"These are all covered of the MOOE fund of the school," she said.

"As an Instructional leader who dreams high, I look forward for having a two-story building with complete facilities and a computer laboratory, a science laboratory, a teacher’s room, a library and a storage room for keeping school properties," thus Principal Guiling ended her address with in mind always: “KEEP HAVING HOPE AND BELIEVING THAT THINGS WILL GET BETTER”.
