Food fair marks Women’s Month in Lanao

The provincial government of Lanao del Sur wrapped up its celebration of the national Women’s Month with an exhibit of local tropical fruits, Maranao cuisines, and delicacies that drew hundreds of patrons. 

Eight local government units of the province’s 39 towns participated in the food fair Wednesday inside the provincial capitol complex at barangay Buadisacayo here, showcasing various foods and delicacies including their locally grown fruits and even vegetables.

Basic rudiments of the Maranaw cooking processes were showcased in some of the colorful exhibit booths.

Participating women teams from the towns of Saguiaran, Lumbac Unayan, Maguing, Balindong, Buadiposo Buntong, Piagapo, Ditsaan-Ramain and Madalum were supervised by the Almujadillah Development Foundation Inc., a non-government organization promoting women's rights in Islam, provincial information officer Jayne Salma Tamano said.

Lady Governor Soraya Alonto-Adiong organized the event to promote local women’s welfare and showcase “for the first time” the intricacies of Maranaw food preparations from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesday, Tamano said.

Maranao cuisines are usually spicy and laced with coconut milk, something the Lanao region’s dominant tribe has preserved in their centuries-old customs and traditions.

Tamano said hundreds of residents and visitors availed of the foods prepared and displayed in colorful booths built by the participating towns.

The participating teams that gathered the largest number of sales during the fair would receive prizes, she said.
