About a hundred Mango and Durian saplings were planted by Company Officials and other stakeholders along the south-eastern perimeter fence of PowerSource Philippines Energy, Inc. proposed 20-Megawatt Steam Power Plant here, June 25.

Vice President Engr. Victor R. Ceniza who led the activities told this paper that the tree planting was in observance of Arbor Month in the country.

Lanao del Norte Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Senior Ecosystems Management Specialist Rafael Dugenio who participated in the activity told the stakeholders that planting of trees is necessary to balance the ecosystem.

He said that according to American Research, an acre of forest absorbs 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and releases 6,000 metric tons of oxygen to the atmosphere.

Despite the expected almost zero carbon emission of its proposed Power Plant, PPEI is supporting all reforestation activities in the adjoining communities to help absorb the carbon exhaled by the animal kingdom and the emissions of automotive and other petroleum fuelled engines which are now the major contributors of carbon in the atmosphere.

Barangay Captains Antonio Alon, Rolando Bado and Aloha Oracion of Kiwalan, Acmac and Dalipuga, respectively, led community participants.

PPEI Project Manager Engr. Gov led the Company employees and contractors who participated in the planting.

Bennie Arie of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) also joined the group along with Republic Cement Corporation ComRel and Environment Manager Engr. Roel Piloton who led some employees of Republic Cement Corporation.

It may be recalled that Republic Cement, Inc. was known earlier to be using 8 of the 20 Megawatts that the PPEI Power Plant is expected to generate.

PPEI Comrels Rechel Centeno and Amor Orbe were among the Planters.
