Chiz tells NTC: Fix internet speed in PH
MANILA - Senator Francis Joseph 'Chiz' Escudero is urging the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) to require telecommunications companies to connect to the country's own unified exchange point for faster internet speeds.
Escudero said NTC should fix the current system of routing Internet data to other countries.
“The NTC should start cracking the whip and fix the system immediately. It cannot be ‘business as usual’ anymore. Let’s do away with the mentality of just accepting the present situation and start doing something about it,” the senator said.
He noted that the commission should ask the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) why it is not connected to the country’s internet exchange facility, Philippine Open Internet Exchange (PHOpenIX), which aims to allow a faster exchange of data among users.
Escudero claimed that PLDT is connected to the Hong Kong Internet Exchange (HKIX) through its private Vitro Internet Exchange (VIX).
“PLDT is the biggest telco in the country. Its sheer size, and the influence it wields in the information and technology industry, could very well change the IT landscape overnight,” he said.
PHOpenIX is developed by government to allow the exchange of Internet traffic in a free-market environment among local internet and data service providers.
PHOpenIX has 33 members, including Globe Telecom; Bayan Telecommunications; Eastern Communication; Comclark Network and Technology Corp.; and Philippine Telegraph and Telephone Co.
In a recent Ookla Speedtest study, data showed that the Philippines has one of the slowest average broadband speeds, not just in Asia, but in the world.
The Ookla household download index, which compares and ranks consumer download speeds around the globe, showed the Philippines ranked 176 out of 202 countries as of May 2015.
The only Asian country that had a slower download speed than the Philippines was Afghanistan, which had a download speed of 2.52 Mbps.
