Asean/ Aug 17 to hear judge recusal bid in Najib-Mkini suit
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court fixed Aug 17 to hear a bid to recuse a judge from hearing a libel suit by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the party against Malaysiakini and its two editors.
Counsel Ashok Kandiah today confirmed the date for the application by his clients Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd - operator of the online news portal - and its editor-in-chief and chief editor Steven Gan and Fathi Aris Omar respectively.
The three defendants filed the application to recuse judge Datuk Wira Kamaludin Md Said two days ago.
Last year they filed a similar bid to recuse Kamaludin, who was then judicial commissioner. However they withdrew it later.
Counsel Nor Hazira Abu Haiyan said the court also set Aug 17 as case management of Najib and Umno's bid to strike out more than 50 paragraphs of the counterclaim and defence of Mkini Dotcom, Gan, and Fathi.
Nor Hazira appeared for Najib and the party during today's case management in Kamaludin's chambers.
Najib and Umno - which acted through its executive secretary Datuk Ab Rauf Yusoh - filed the suit on May 30 last year.
They claimed that the publication of Malaysiakini readers' comments on May 14 the same year had ruined their reputation.
Mkini, Gan, and Fathi Aris later filed a counterclaim against Najib and Umno.
