Bukidnon breaches Iligan terrritory?

Representatives of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) told the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) of Iligan that there are overlapping cadastral surveys of Iligan and Bukidnon on the areas near sitio Limunsodan, Rogongon, Iligan City.

This was during the Regular Session of the SP last March 17.

Representatives of DENR Bukidnon and DENR Iligan were asked to appear before the SP to shed light on reports of Higaonon Tribal Chieftains Datu Lantong and Datu Abungan that residents of Talakag, Bukidnon, are cutting trees in sitio Limunsodan accompanied by DENR personnel from Bukidnon.

The representatives of DENR from Bukidnon showed maps to the SP that encroached on Iligan territory according to the Tribal Chieftains.

According to the Limunsodan tribal chieftains if there is a need to exploit the natural resources in their ancestral lands, it should be made under the supervision of DENR Iligan.

Councilor Emmanuel Salibay, the Chairman of the SP Committee of Indigenous People informed the Bukidnon representatives that the Higaonons of Limunsodan are complaining because when problems of peace and order occur, Talakag does not respond because the sitio is outside of their jurisdiction but when it comes to the cutting of timber the place becomes part of Talakag.

It was not yet clear what action the SP of Iligan will do regarding the situation. However, it appears that this is just one of the boundary problems that the City government faces.

On the western end of the same northern border, Iligan has a dispute with Lugait, Misamis Oriental concerning the boundary where parts of Holcim Cement and Mapalad Power Corporation stand.

It was temporarily settled through a compromise by dividing equally between the City of Iligan and the municipality of Lugait the taxes collected from the said area.

There is also a question along the same border, not formally disputed, between Iligan and Lugait at barangay Bitahon of Lugait and Hindang of Iligan.

And finally, there is that unresolved boundary dispute between the City Government of Iligan and the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte and the municipality of Baloi, Lanao del Norte.

In this last dispute taxes payable by the National Power Corporation for Agus 5 are now held in escrow in the bank until the Court shall have determined who is lawfully entitled to receive the funds.
