Cha-cha still possible - Belmonte

MANILA, Philippines -- The House leadership is still optimistic that Charter Change is still possible although he admits that he feels the pressure that Filipinos are not yet ready to accept Cha-cha.

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., insisted that changing selected provisions of the Constitution, which he already identified, could make a giant leap in the economy.

“I'm having doubts about that, but still I will like to continue it because it's needed. People who are in business, our businessmen, foreign businesses cannot understand why such an innocuous amendment which is simply an empowering from Congress having a difficult time to pass,” he said.

He said that he would still push Cha-cha whether it was difficult or not to show that it was still a giant step forward if the house could succeed in getting the very high majority vote required. This is not a simple majority of the quorum, he added.
