(Editorial) SPOILERS OF THE PEACE PROCESS

Just when the Bangsamoro Basic Law was about to be passed by Congress to seal what was hoped to be a lasting peace in Mindanao, the unfortunate Mamasapano Massacre happened.

Thereafter, sporadic attacks by elements of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were launched against both military and civilian targets in Maguindanao.

Fortunately, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) that negotiated to reach the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) has matured to be an organization of honorable men who have learned that nobody wins in a fratricidal war.

Despite the failure of the Bangsamoro Basic Law to pass Congress, the MILF has chosen to follow the path of peace and resolved that the realization of the Bangsamoro dreams and aspirations can be attained through peaceful means.

The election of a man from Mindanao to the highest post in the republic brings a new and brighter hope for the attainment of a lasting formula that will solve the problems of these southern islands.

Sadly, however, there seems to be people who want to derail efforts to solve the Mindanao problem and achieve a lasting peace.

While the BIFF has somewhat silenced their guns, the band of what the government authorities call “local terrorists” led by the Maute brothers of Butig disturbed the peace in that remote municipality ending in the loss of many more lives.

On the other hand while Kumander Bravo asserts that his command has no hand in the atrocities made by the Maute brothers and their band, in his claimed area of jurisdiction spoilers of the peace are also doing their thing.

Recently, 6 students of MSU-IIT Iligan were kidnapped and brought to a place believed to be within the municipality of Munai, Lanao del Norte where an MILF camp was known to have existed.

Four of the students had been released but two are still in the hands of their captors.

The Administration of MSU-IIT is hoping that the students remaining in captivity will soon be released. One of them would have marched as a member of the graduating class on Sunday, June 12.

What if the MILF help in neutralizing the spoilers of the peace process? The New Ranao Star
