ILIGAN CITY - The Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) held its 2015 Regional (10) Convention and Assembly at Elena Tower here last Thursday, October 1.

Former City Councilor and Acting City Administrator Orlando M. Maglinao, on behalf of Acting Mayor Ruderic C. Marzo who was attending to other urgent matters, welcomed the delegates from the different provinces of Region 10.

PNA National President Mila Delia M. Llanes gave the perspective on the theme of the affair, “Filipino Nurses Responding to the Demands and Challenges of Health Care in ASEAN.”

She said that the integration of the ASEAN economy brings both threats and opportunities to Filipino Nurses.

However, she said the threat of nurses from other ASEAN countries entering the Philippine market is not quite disturbing since salaries are not high in this country.

She instead foresees that opportunities are likely for Filipino nurses getting employed in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand where salary rates are higher.

She challenged the nurses to prepare by upgrading= their skills in the health care profession

In a related vein, Llanes told newsmen that the PNA now aims for educating the Filipinos on disease prevention through exercise and proper nutrition.

She said the adage that “prevention is better than cure” is very relevant in the field of health care.

“Ang Nurse” Party-List Representative Leah Primitiva S. Paquiz reported on her achievements in Congress.

She said that she authored 5 House Bills that were eventually passed into law, namely: R.A. 10643 – The Graphic Health Warning Law, R. A. 10645 – Mandatory PhilHealth Coverage for Senior Citizens, R.A. 10647 – Ladderized Education Act, R.A. 10648 – Eskolar ng Bayan Act and R.A. 10650 – Open-Distance Learning Act.

She also reported that she has filed 14 House Bills now pending and 11 House Resolutions.

Among those bills are the Freedom of Information Bill, the Comprehensive Nursing Law, the Barangay Health Workers and Services Act and others that pertain to health and health care. TNRS
