Power supply in Mindanao improving - Petilla

DAVAO CITY —- Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla revealed that only electric cooperatives that rely solely on the hydro-electric power supplied by the power plants run by Agus and Pulangi experience brownouts nowadays in Mindanao.

He said there is still deficit in power supply since rainfall just came in, however, the situation is better than last summer.

Petilla said most cooperatives no longer have brownouts and those which have brownouts are cooperatives that are under-contracted.

“Meaning, they do not have contract with power providers and rely solely on Agus-Pulangi which cannot sustain the power supply, even with the increasing power demand,” he said.

Petilla said the hydropower source can only give so much given the increase number in the population.

He said electric cooperatives need to contract elsewhere for additional power supply.

Petilla underscored the operation of the coal-fired- power plant at Barangay Binugao, Toril which can boost the power supply for Mindanao.

“It is one of the bigger plants that will give enough power in Mindanao. It is a big help for the people here,” he said.

Petilla was a guest of honor and speaker in the 48th founding anniversary of Davao del Norte in July 1. Agency
