PIAGAPO, Lanao del Sur: Youth leaders of the municipality of Piagapo, Lanao del Sur kicked off on Monday their three-day First Piagapo Youth Leaders Summit at the municipal complex here to be held from December 17 to 19, 2018.

Municipal mayor Engr. Ali L. Sumandar led the opening program of the youth summit attended by around 150 youth leaders from the different villages or barangays of Piagapo.

In a welcome message, Mayor Sumandar encouraged the youth to aim high or have bigger ambition. "So that even if you don't reach the peak, you still will not fail but achieve something."

Citing himself as an example, the mayor who is a licensed engineer said when he took the engineering board exams, he aimed to be with the Top 5 passers. But he did not make it to the Top 5 yet he landed among the Top 20 passers which is quite an achievement.

"That was a good example of aiming high, having bigger ambition," he said.

Facing the greatest challenge in the history of the Maranao People, he said we cannot just sit idly watching what happened to Marawi. "We cannot deny that Marawi is not ours; it is really ours," he said.

Sumandar said even if they are in Piagapo, what happened in Marawi has greatly affected them not only economically but every aspect of life.

He said that the Marawi Siege was due to violent extremism and false ideology of very young people.

Terrorists who are mostly young attacked Marawi last May 23, 2017 and it took the government forces to liberate the city over five months. Lives had been lost, properties had been damaged and caused hundreds of thousands of evacuees.

"We need you to be the architect of our sustainable future. You will organize among you new young leaders for the betterment of tomorrow's future not only of our beloved Piagapo but in the entire province of Lanao del Sur," he said.

He said such change does not happen by itself; it must be pursued with vigor and by all of society. And that is where the youth come in. He appealed then to the youth to act for the common good and to get others to join them.

The chief executive said this smart choice for the youth to take this sustainable journey is for everybody's best interest. He said a prosperous stable society and healthy planning are the let-up of political stability, economic growth and flourishing development that everyone has a role to play.

The 1st Piagapo Youth Leaders Summit is powered by the Local Government of Piagapo in strong partnership with the 12th Civil-Military Operations Battalion of the Philippine Army. It will gather local youth leaders to share ideas and enhance their potential to become empowered young citizens as actors in building a morally and spiritually upright society.

True to its theme, "Arise. Lead. Inspire," the 1st Piagapo Youth Leaders Summit is worthy of emulation by other municipalities and prevent the youth from being misled and wayward.

The occasion was graced by Mohammad Khalid Raki-in Adiong, federation president of Sangguniang Kabataan of Lanao del Sur, as the guest speaker, and  LTC Wilfredo Amoma, INF (GSC) PA, commanding officer of 12th Civil-Military Operations Battalion CMO Regiment of the Philippine Army.
